When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. (v. 13)
Background
This week we have seven wonderful Bible passages to explore together. From the books of Genesis to Revelation we will hear our forebears speaking of hope and holiness, glory and wonder, unity and diversity. Some such as Genesis and Proverbs will find inspiration from observing the majesty of creation, while today’s passage from the Gospel of John finds inspiration from encountering Jesus.
The preparation for these notes has been a collective experience by members of St Helier Methodist Church in Jersey. On a Thursday morning we usually read a chapter of the Bible (we’ve just finished 28 weeks with the Book of Acts!), and before starting a new book of the Bible we took the opportunity to prepare these notes together.
In this passage we noticed how Jesus speaks about his closeness with the Father, "All that the Father has is mine" (v. 15) and the promise of the "Spirit of truth… who will guide you into all truth" (v. 13). The language used to describe the relationship between Jesus, the Father and the Spirit of Truth is highly personal. Today’s passage is part of a large section in John’s Gospel which implies that each member of the Trinity is an active and individual identity of the Divine, which are held together in unity. While there is no mention of the word Trinity in the New Testament, passages such as this, Mark 1:9-11 and 2 Corinthians 13:13 laid the foundations for theologians in the 4th century to begin expressing the glory of God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Thirty-eight years ago I was asked a question which I have never forgotten. As I was being interviewed for the ministry I was asked, "Are you growing in your encounter with each member of the Trinity?" The person genuinely wanted to know whether I had eyes to see God’s hand in creation, a heart open to discover his love upon the Cross, and a mind open to the renewing energy of the Spirit. That question still challenges me, still guides me and still helps me.
